A couple of weeks ago just after the new year, I was fortunate enough to attend a concert at the infamous 9:30 Club. Now if you’ve lived in DC or know anything about the music scene here, The 9:30 Club has been a staple in the city for a long time since the 80’s. Lots of local bands and artists and big time names have passed thru here. The Speaks themselves, Go-Go King Chuck Brown, The Bangles, Cyndi Lauper, (For you 80’s fans) Lupe Fiasco, Wu-Tang Clan just to name a few (that Wu-Tang show was the best! And all members were there except O.D.B.,RIP). 5 years ago my friend Archie was part of a band called The Speaks. My friends and I have known Archie since back in the day school days, and to see someone we knew up on stage rockin’ a crowd a people, I have to say is pretty fuqqin’ awesome. Any local show that they would perform at, we would be there supporting. The Speaks were just a group of guys who loved making and playing music. Passion. An ingredient to success that anyone who wants to make it in anything needs. These guys were able to go on tour in the Philippines, have their music played on DC101, have music videos played on MTV Asia, win battle of the band competitions…and The Washington Post even named them one of the Top 5 Bands in 2009. But as always, a time comes when people have to grow up and move on and so everyone started their own projects or decided to settle down. Fast forward to 2014. 5 years after playing their last show at the 9:30 Club, The Speaks returned for a reunion concert to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. 100% of the proceeds were donated to different charities supporting the victims of the Philippines. For anyone that wasn’t there, all I can say is that you missed a hell of a show. These guys took it back with all their songs and made it feel just like old times! Big props to Rob Shipp for getting these guys back together and doing it for a great cause. It definitely was an awesome show and it was a great way to start off 2014! Not too many people can say that they did media for one of the best local bands at the world famous 9:30 Club!!! Enjoy the pictures!!
